My podcast

I made this podcast about the upcoming NBA playoffs. I used garage band. All you have to do is click record and be ready to speak. I also added a nice drumbeat to my podcast. I think podcasts could be used in the classroom as lectures so students can pause and rewind while listening. Also they're great to assign to students because it gives to show their creativeness without the anxiety of presenting in front of the class.

Class Presentations

I feel like overall my presentation went well. I think I could of rehearsed more of what I was going to say during my presentation. I left some stuff out of my presentation that I would of like to have been in there. I also feel like on slides 2 and 4 I had too many words. I think if I added an image or short video clip to either of those it would of been better. I didn't have a picture of Salman Khan on my presentation which would of been something I could of added.

I found the slide shows to be creative. There were lots of cool images that helped me understand their point and all of the presentations were easy too read I found the speaking part of the presentations to have room for improvement. People seemed shy and timid while presenting. We all seemed a little unrehearsed (which there can be too much rehearsal but a little is necessary). We all could of spoken with a lot more confidence as well. The presentation were interesting to me because I am passionate about teaching, so it was good for me to hear different points of view on education.

I happy we got to practice our presentation skill because it is a big part of teaching, and I hope we get another opportunity later on in the semester.

Image Manipulation

The last few years photoshop has been used a lot more in magazine publications to make women seem more attractive. As the cameraman in this video put it "99.9%" of photos in magazines are retouched to make the subject more attractive. I believe this is harmful to both women and men. For women, they are being pressured into trying to become the perfect looking person. It hurts their self esteem and confidence to see women that appear to be perfect in their looks. Some women strive to be the perfect looking women which can be harmful to one's physical and emotional state. For men, some, not nearly as many as women, fall into the same category as women as trying to construct a perfect body. The way it is most harmful to men is that they try and search for the perfect woman which does not exist. It leads to them being unsatisfied because there standards for physical beauty is too high. A potential solution would be if a magazine came out and publicly shared they were not going to use any photoshop in their photos. It would be more truthful of what beauty is in today's society. And hopefully if one magazine made this their policy than it would lead to other magazines changing their policy as well.

Social media sites are beginning to be introduced in classes. It's a way to increase communication between teachers and students outside of the classroom. With the use of social media teachers are able to post assignments, send messages to students, post class calendars, and post helpful videos. Sites being used by teachers are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pintrest, Edmodo, and Coursesites to communicate to their students. For high school students, I think teachers using social media sites is a good idea since most high school students are participants in social media and are accustomed to how social media works. A concern I have with social media is forcing students to use social media sites that are not strictly for academic purposes(Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram). Cyberbullying is present on these sites and forcing students to join this sites could lead them to online harassment, so if teachers decide to use social media as part of the class they should use a strictly academic only site like Edmodo or Coursesites where there is less cyberbullying. My other concern is social media discourages in person communication which may hurt a students social skill. According to campus technology, "Students may find themselves at a disadvantage during college admission or job interviews when they need to command attention and deliver a coherent message. At social gatherings and in personal relationships, they need to be able to effectively express themselves and connect with others." Teachers must help students succeed in their future which extends more than just the content in the classroom, so it is still important to still help students with their social skills.

The CLT room is a great place for me to get work done for school. Before last thursday I didn't know about the CLT, so now that I know about it I'll definitely be utilizing it more. It's a great place to study because it is quiet and has computer access. Having a nice quite place to study is imperative for me since basketball takes up a lot of my time. I know that if I ever have to make a video for a class I can check out the video kit with all the accessories to help make a good video. For basketball the CLT would be a good place if the team ever wanted to watch game film to scout an opponent or critique ourselves. It has a nice setup with the tables facing each other and the big screen TV. My favorite feature of the CLT room is the video conference capability. I'd feel a lot more comfortable doing a video interview in the CLT room rather in my dorm room where anything could happen at anytime.

Here is a link to a video I made that shows some of the features in the CLT room: http://youtu.be/lNwpKHrPZCY
